Pond Care Information
A pond can be set up easily. You'll need a pond, gravel and some plants.
Put your pond in place and place 2-3 inches of gravel at the bottom. Add water and let it sit for a few days. This gives the water a chance to "mature".
Plants can now be added. Place "marginals" round the edges and "floaters" on the surface of the water.
If you want to add fish, float the bags containing the fish in the pond for a couple of hours to allow the temperatures to equalise.
Release your fish and enjoy them - Koi can even be trained to eat from your hand!
This setup does not include a pump or filtration so the pond will "naturalise" - the water may not be as clear as one with a pump and filtration system.
For a more sophisticated system there is more detailed information given below.

Detailed information

Aeration:

There are two basic types of aeration. One is called "sub-surface aeration," which is performed by using a compressor on land feeding diffusers that are placed at the bottom of the pond. This type of aeration works best with larger ponds with depths of 4 feet and deeper. These systems require very little maintenance and can operate year round. The diffuser introduces bubbles from a depth to achieve oxygen transfer and mixing.

The other more common type is called "surface aeration," and is performed using fountains or waterfalls, which are anchored in the pond. These fountains can have many different nozzle patterns as well as lights. They do require some maintenance from time to time.

Both systems will address many problems that occur in ponds today, such as algae, stagnation, aquatics weeds, odors, insects, sludge.

Weed Control:

Plants are necessary in water for the maintenance of all other forms of aquatic life, and have various favorable effects on the aquatic environment. However, aquatic plants may become pests depending on their abundance. Excess aquatic plant growth is considered to have a detrimental effect on water quality.

Pond Planting:

Plant the sides of your pond or lake with a variety of marginal plants, including Iris etc. You can also plant flowering Lilies in the pond. These plantings will give a natural looking appearance to the pond, provide cover to small fish and other aquatic wildlife, as well as helping with the overall health of your pond's ecosystem.

Pond Bacteria Additives:

An alternative and environmentally safe method for controlling algae is the application of bacterial additives. These bacteria work by helping to reduce high levels of phosphorus, nitrates, and ammonia: chemicals which when left alone help to produce algae and other aquatic growth. The use of additives will also help reduce odors, murky water, and pond scum. Bacterial additives will help to put your pond into better biological equilibrium.

Algae Control:

Algae Control: The best way to control Algae is through a pond management program, which may include one or all of the following items: aeration, fish stocking, bacteria, and algaecides. There is no easy answer to controlling algae. Every pond needs to be analyzed to best determine the correct course of action.

Filtration:

In ponds there are two types of filtration that are needed: Mechanical, and Biological. Mechanical Filtration is the separation of solids which can be done many ways:

Settlement Chambers
Vortex Filters
Bead Filters
Bag Filters
External Box Filters
Skimmer Boxes
Biological Filtration is the break down of toxic chemicals that are generated by fish waste. Pond water must pass thru media, on which bacteria is grown, to convert the toxics to harmless Nitrates. The medium can one of many different types. Size and amount are based on the pond size.

U.V. Sterilization:

Ultraviolet Sterilization is a proven way of effectively controlling algae in ponds. It can also eliminate viruses, bacteria, and fungi. This is a great way to maintain a healthy pond with out the use of chemicals.
